Oklahoma Tornadoes: Why So Many?
Overall, Oklahoma ranks behind Texas in both the total number of tornadoes and the number of “killer tornadoes”. However, if the statistics are narrowed down to tornadoes per square mile, Oklahoma has more tornadoes than any other place on earth.
Geographically, Oklahoma is in the heart of the central United States, an area that has been dubbed “Tornado Alley." This area of approximately 70,000 square miles in the heart of America is where cold air masses formed in the Rocky Mountains, Canada or the Great Lakes collide with the warm, moist air masses they pull up from the Gulf of Mexico.
