Halloween Safety Tips
Pumpkin Carving:
· Never let children carve pumpkins without adult supervision
· Adults should use specifically designed carving knives, rather than kitchen knives
· Carve the pumpkin in small, controlled strokes, away from oneself on a strong, sturdy surface
Costume Safety:
· Purchase a flame resistant costume, masks, wigs and other components
· If using a homemade costume, use flame resistant materials
· Avoid baggy sleeves and billowing skirts
· Use reflective tape or other materials – found at hardware or sporting goods stores - to be easily visible at night
· Make sure the costume is well-fitted with sturdy shoes to be trip resistant
· Use make up instead of masks to avoid obstructing vision
· Swords, knives and similar accessories should be soft and flexible
Pedestrian Safety:
· Walk, don’t run
· Caution against running out from between parked cars, or across lawns and yards where ornaments or furniture present dangers
Poisoning Safety:
· Warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering
· Adults check treats to make sure they are in the original, unopened packaging
